CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The City of Chicago began accepting applications Monday from people who want to receive a free bike from the city.
Chicago plans to distribute 5,000 bikes and safety equipment over the next four years to residents who: are above the age of 14, are in financial need, and have difficulty getting around town.
The application period will remain open until Aug. 4. Bikes will begin to be distributed in August.
Applications may be submitted online or via paper applications. The city has said there will be no preference based on how an application is submitted.
“Every resident in our city deserves equitable access to safe, reliable, and affordable clean transportation options,” Mayor Lori Lightfoot said in a press release earlier this month.
Although the larger plan is to distribute 5,000 bikes, only 500 bikes will be given out in 2022.
More information about applications has been listed here.
