CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The Archdiocese of Chicago is forbidding noted scholar Cornel West from speaking at St. Sabina Church during Black History Month.

“Doctor West has been coming to St. Sabina every February for more than 24, 25 years,” St. Sabina Pastor Rev. Michael Pfleger told WBBM.

Cornel West, professor of philosophy  and Christian practice at Princeton University is a longtime friend of Pfleger’s.

Pfleger said  West, a potential candidate for the White House, was not coming with a political agenda.

Pfleger said  he received a call from the Archdiocese around noon

“The cardinal had said he’s not allowed to speak here because he is a presidential candidate,” Pleger revealed. “I explained to the person who I spoke to on the phone that he’s not coming to talk about running, not talking about being a candidate. He’s coming to talk about Black history, which what he’s always spoken about.”

In an email response to WBBM’s inquiry, an Archdiocese of Chicago spokesperson wrote “no comment.”
