(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- With great fanfare, demolition crews began tearing down the grandstand at the former Arlington International Racecourse on Friday, as the Chicago Bears stressed that the team's stadium proposal for the property is not a done deal.
Members of the media gathered at Arlington Heights to watch as heavy equipment began ripping up the pavilion where crowds for decades watched horse races. It's considered Phase 2 of the demolition that will lead to the property's redevelopment.
Questions persist about where the Bears will play games in the future when its lease at Solder Field expires.
The team has purchased the racetrack property for a possible new home. But the franchise has had discussions with Naperville, too, and the city of Waukegan is angling to build the team a new home as well. Recently, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson's administration said it would try to keep the Bears in the city.
