(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A retired U.S. Army Ranger who grew up in Chicago and served in Afghanistan after 9/11 is wondering what was accomplished over 20 years there.

Tom Amenta was among the first troops in Afghanistan in 2002. He said his feelings about what is happening now are complicated.

The Taliban keeps advancing following the withdrawal of U.S. troops.

Amenta said the Afghan people he worked with are dying. He said he knows what right looks like, and this doesn’t look right.

“We’re going to leave these people to the mercy of the exact people we went over to fight 20 years ago,” Amenta tells WBBM Newsradio’s Mike Krauser.

He said he’s also thinking about his comrades who are still in the military, among others.

“I don’t know anyone who isn’t questioning, ‘Then what was it all for?’”

Amenta is the co-author of a forthcoming book, The Twenty-Year War.
