CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Illinois Secretary of State’s Office said it’s going to take action to reduce the long lines occurring at many of its facilities. But, a candidate running to head that office said she has some long term ideas of her own.
Chicago Alderwoman Pat Dowell’s campaigning to replace retiring Secretary of State Jesse White.
Dowell hears lots of complaints about the lines at Secretary of State facilities around Illinois; and she’s proposing a fix, to let people do much more of their business online. She envisions a so-called “personal dashboard”, similar to online banking.
"You have a particular password and a username that's tied to your account; in this case, it would be tied to your state ID or driver's license, where you can enter into the virtual world and take care some of the business at the Secretary of State's office," Dowell said.
The dashboard would also be able to handle voter registration, organ donation forms, and more.
"We have to learn how to do government in a different way to bring services to the people," Dowell said.
