(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — In an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19, the city of Aurora reinstated its universal masking policy.
Any individual, whether vaccinated against COVID-19 or not, must wear a mask or face covering inside Aurora city buildings.
“It kind of takes us back to where we were, prior to the restrictions being lifted,” Communications Officer Clayton Muhammad said.
The mandate follows guidance issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It applies to City Hall, police and fire stations as well as at public meetings.
As of Wednesday, all four counties that Aurora straddles had reached the “substantial” transmission level for COVID-19, with more than 50 new cases per 100,000 people in the last week.
In addition to requiring masks, Mohammed tells WBBM Newsradio the city remains focused on getting more residents vaccinated.
“We know we can beat the COVID. We know we can fight off this Delta variant. We know the statistics say that the majority of people who are getting the Delta variant and are being hospitalized — and sadly passing away — are primarily those that are unvaccinated.”
The city also advises everyone to maintain social distance from others while inside municipal buildings.
