(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A former west suburban police chief is finding a new way to serve the public.

Kristen Ziman retired in September after 30 years with the Aurora Police Department. Since then, she’s been busy, traveling the country consulting with other police agencies and even writing a book that is due out in May.

Lately, she’s been spending a lot of time in the kitchen, filling orders for birthday and wedding cakes. Ziman and her wife — a retired police sergeant — call their baking business Cop Cakes Criminal Confections. The effort dates back to 2012 but was put on pause.

Now, it’s back and busier than ever.

In many ways, cake-making could not be more different than police work, Ziman said.

“When you call 9-1-1, people aren’t usually all that happy to see you because it’s not for a happy occasion, right? And so it’s really cool to ring the doorbell with a cake and have people light up when we arrive.”
