CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Fast-tracking of Mayor Lightfoot’s plans to build a casino in the River West community is planned for today at City Hall.
Mayor Lightfoot said that, unless the City Council quickly approves of Bally’s, the council would eventually have to raise property taxes while alderpeople were running for re-election.
So, the plan today is to have a special council committee meet this afternoon. Committee chair Tom Tunney sees that committee giving a thumbs up to Bally’s plan. That would be followed by a full City Council meeting later in the day and a procedural move that would allow the proposal to get a final stamp of approval at another meeting on Wednesday.
Bally’s wants to put a casino near Chicago Avenue and Halsted. If it gets the okay from the Council and the Illinois Gaming Board, a temporary casino could be set up next year at the Medinah Temple while the permanent casino is being built.
The city’s eventual share of casino cash is slated to fund police and fire pensions.
