Never brush off a package you didn’t order.
Jay Elliott with the Better Business Bureau’s Tip-Off to the Rip-Off® on WBBM Newsradio explained why this week. It’s related to a type of fraud called “brushing scams.”
Brushing scams happen when your personal information, pulled from public records, social media, or even illegal sources, is used to set up fake online shopping accounts.
Scammers then buy their own product, usually low-cost, lightweight items, and ship them to your real address just to generate a delivery tracking number.
That tracking number lets them post a fake, “verified-purchase” five-star review, boosting their rankings and luring real shoppers.
If this happens to you, don’t scan any QR codes. Instead, contact the online retailer directly so they can remove the fake reviews and ban the scammer.
Also, you should change your passwords.
