(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Enough is enough: that’s the message to management from workers at a Bellwood construction company who gathered to voice their safety concerns Tuesday.
The workers, alongside the group Arise Chicago, voiced their concerns at the footsteps of SureBuilt Concrete Forms and Accessories, at 840 South 25th Avenue.
“We are here today to highlight the serious failures in the areas of safety and the non-existent safety management that impacts us workers," said Fernando Viteli.
Fernando Viteli, who worked in occupational safety and health in Ecuador, says he was fired from SureBuilt after he demanded safety improvements for workers, such as training, equipment maintenance, and better pay.
“All these failures result in workplace injuries and can lead to serious, long-term issues, even death, affecting families and our local economies.”
He also translated comments from several other workers with similar frustrations.
“We still see workers being injured on the job, and the company has not responded to some of our demands,” he translated.
The group did commend SureBuilt for cooperating with most of their concerns, but said enough is not being done to protect them and delivered management a letter to ensure that changes.
WBBM Newsradio has reached out to SureBuilt management for comment.
