(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Is it for sale, or isn’t it?

Word surfaced late last week that retired Cubs utility player Ben Zobrist was selling his 2016 World Series ring.

The news came from Heritage Auctions, a reputable seller of sports memorabilia. Zobrist, a central Illinois native, was MVP of the series that ended the Cubs’ long world championship drought (he also was on the Kansas City Royals team that won the 2015 World Series).

Zobrist’s agent quickly told the Chicago Tribune the former pro is not selling the Cubs World Series ring. Scott Pucino said Zobrist assured him, “I’m never going to get rid of this ring — never, never, ever.”

Heritage Auctions, as of Sunday, had not deleted the tweet announcing the auction of the World Series hardware. The Zobrist item had been billed as the first players ring form the 2016 World Series that was up for auction.

Heritage spokesperson Robert Wilonsky told the Kansas City Star the firm was trying to get to the bottom of the conflicting stories.

Wilonsky said the auction house’s information the ring is for sale came from a consigner who reportedly had purchased it.

“… it’s possible (Zobrist) had a duplicate ring made. There’s any number of possible answers to the question,” the Star quoted Wilonsky as saying.
