(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The chief organizer of this weekend’s Bud Billiken Parade says safety is top of mind, especially in the wake of the Highland Park parade shooting.
Myiti Sengstacke-Rice is president and CEO of Chicago Defender Charities, which sponsors the South Side parade as well as a related festival in Washington Park, where children receive free services and supplies to prepare them for school.
Sengstacke-Rice says she understands some people might be concerned about safety following the Fourth of July parade shooting.
She said organizers have been working with police for months and meet more frequently as the event nears.
“We make sure that we have a safe and secure parade,” she said.
Police Supt. David Brown said security plans have been enhanced to include increased surveillance of building roofs and other locations where a shooter could target the parade and picnic.
