
CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A 16-year-old boy died Monday morning after he was pulled out of Lake Michigan near Montrose Beach, according to the Chicago Police Department (CPD).
Police said the teenager, along with a 16-year-old girl, took a raft out onto Lake Michigan. Shortly after 9 a.m., though, officials said the raft flipped.
A bystander managed to pull the girl to shore, and CPD said she was uninjured.
Divers with the Chicago Fire Department located the boy and pulled him out of the water. He was taken to Weiss Hospital, where he was declared dead.
Officials said Area Three detectives are investigating.
Over the weekend, a 58-year-old man went missing in Chicago’s “Playpen” — the area of Lake Michigan between Oak Street and the Ohio Street Beach. The search for his body has now been deemed a recovery operation.
Farther north, near Winnetka, the Coast Guard found a woman who had been missing for hours after the sailboat she was on capsized.
The Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project, which tracks drownings in the Great Lakes, reported that, as of June 9, 2024, seven people have drowned in Lake Michigan. In 2023, 41 people drowned in Lake Michigan.
