CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The 21-month-old boy shot and critically wounded during what Chicago police call a road-rage dispute on Lake Shore Drive is in a medically induced coma, and doctors say they're hoping for the best.

A passenger in the car the boy was in when he was shot yesterday near Grant Park was being questioned by police.

Dr. Marcelo R. Malakooti, the head of the pediatric intensive care unit at Lurie Children’s Hospital, on Wednesday said the child remains critically ill.

On the positive side, the physician says: “He has been unchanged, so he has not worsened. But he’s remained critically ill.”

In addition to putting the child in a medically induced coma, the hospital has given the patient drugs meant to keep his brain from swelling, Malakooti said.

Doctors have not seen the need to open the boy’s skull, which is a good sign, he said.

The coming days will give a better sense of whether the boy will make a full recovery.

The child was gravely wounded around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday near Grant Park. He has been identified by several media outlets as Kayden Swann.
