Bradley Police Department warns of fake fundraisers for slain sergeant

BRADLEY, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Bradley Police Department has issued a warning about fake fundraisers created for fallen Sgt. Marlene Rittmanic, who was fatally shot in the line of duty Wednesday night at a Bradley hotel.

Go Fund Me campaigns claiming to support the family of Rittmanic are fake, according to a statement the Bradley Police Department posted on Facebook Saturday.

They encouraged people to report any fraudulent fundraisers and ask for a refund if they’ve already donated.

The department posted a link to a t-shirt fundraiser approved by Rittmanic's family but said her family will not be using Go Fund Me for fundraising though relatives of her partner, Officer Tyler Bailey, have a Go Fund Me page set up for him.

The 27-year-old was critically wounded in the same shooting last week after he and Rittmanic responded to a call about a dog that had been left in an unattended vehicle at a Comfort Inn. When the officers went to the room of the person whose vehicle it was, they were attacked and shot.

The police department has linked to a legitimate fundraiser by Bailey's aunt that has raised $55,635 of a $75,000 goal as of press time.

Darius Sullivan, the 25-year-old who allegedly opened fire on the two officers, was arrested Friday morning as police, including SWAT teams and U.S. Marshalls, executed a search warrant at a home in North Manchester, Indiana, 125 miles away from Bradley.
