CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Today marks Brandon Johnson’s first Chicago City Council meeting as Mayor, and it’s shaping up to be an interesting day in several respects.

To be sure, this won’t be as charged an atmosphere as four years ago, when then Mayor Lori Lightfoot was challenged by indicted Alderman Edward Burke at her first Council meeting, and swiftly shut him down.

Neither Lightfoot nor Burke are here now. But, Mayor Johnson will preside over a possible vote on a City Council reorganization that could see Pat Dowell become the first Black woman to chair the powerful Finance Committee, ushering more but not total independence for the City Council.

Also scheduled for a vote, an ordinance to approve $51 million more for migrant assistance, and it likely won’t be the last such request.
