CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- As gun violence surges across the city, Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown will take questions from members of the Chicago City Council during a special session on Friday.

Twenty aldermen called for Friday's special meeting of the Chicago City Council to address violence across the city. While the number of homicides slightly trails last year's pace, the number of shootings is up 13 percent compared to the first six months of 2020.

When asked if he thought Friday's meeting was political theater, Superintendent David Brown responded with poetry and a quote from Alfred, Lord Tennyson.

"Ours is not to question why, but to do or die. Next question..." Brown said.

He added he will leave the political commentary to others.

"I don't comment on political issues. You all know that by now," Brown said.

Mayor Lightfoot has called Friday's meeting a political stunt, and said all 50 alderman had the opportunity to attend three separate briefings from the superintendent about the police department's summer violence plan.
