BUFFALO GROVE, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- On Tuesday, we told you about Buffalo Grove residents packing a village board meeting and demanding that a pride flag be flown from the village hall flag pole. Now, there’s a pride flag flying in a different location.
"Raising this flag is a symbol to all members of the community that we are welcome and safe," said one resident.
It’s not on the pole that they wanted - in front of the village hall, but the village did allow for the pride flag to be flown at what’s called the Rotary Village Green, located at 265 N. Buffalo Grove, near the Town Center.
"It would be embarrassing to be the last community in the area to fly the flag," said another resident.
Activist and Buffalo Grove Pride parade organizer Carolyn Pinta, who was behind the effort to raise the pride flag, said "the spot that they chose is lovely for this year," but, according to the Daily Herald, she was disheartened that it took organizing a rally of of about 40 people outside village hall before Monday's village board meeting to get to this point.
In the end, though, she said "I’ll take it," the Daily Herald reported.
The Village said plans were already in the works to fly the flag where it is now.
On the advice of counsel, the request that the flag be raised at the village hall was denied, because it would turn the flag pole into a public forum, as former trustee Jeffrey Berman explained.
"Next week it could be something much more sinister - a swastika," he said.
The pride flag will be flown at the Rotary Village Green for the remainder of June.
