(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Halloween is next Monday, which means stores will be in full-blown holiday mode by next Tuesday.

A certified financial planner says you can buy gifts while navigating inflation — and without going into debt.

Ed Gjertsen, of the Engage Wealth Group in Chicago, told the WBBM Noon Business Hour that you can save and set a holiday budget because Christmas comes on the same day every year.

"Whether it's holiday gift giving or other things, it's not a surprise on the calendar when the holidays roll around," Gjertsen said.

Buy now, pay later services have become increasingly popular. They allow people to buy things for a small, upfront price, and pay the rest in interest-free installments.

Gjertsen said they can work, as long as you make the payments on time.

"Looking at the different options, whether it's buy now, pay later or credit cards, just be careful about overextending yourself, especially in these inflationary times," Gjertsen said.
