
CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- An innocent bystander was one of two people killed Wednesday night during a shootout at a neighborhood grocery store in the South Shore community.
Chicago police said a 49-year-old man had been inside Big Salem’s Food Mart in the 1700 block of East 71st Street just before 9 p.m., when a 16-year-old boy standing outside fired shots into the store, apparently targeting two people.
The two people inside the store returned fire, striking the teen in the abdomen and neck, police said.
During the exchange of gunfire, the 49-year-old innocent bystander was shot in the head and neck.
Both the 16-year-old boy and the 49-year-old man were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead, police said.
No one else was injured.
Police are still investigating. No arrests have been reported.
