(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Discipline, taste, motivation, and genetic makeup could all be factors in whether someone eats meat or is a vegetarian or vegan.
That's according to a new study from Northwestern University, which found that certain genes are linked to vegetarianism.
Dr. Nabeel Yaseen, who worked on the study, said the study of thousands of people's diets shows many things factor into giving up meat.
“If you are trying to be vegetarian and are not able to quite stick to a strict vegetarian diet, don’t blame yourself,” Yaseen said. “This may have to do something with genetics.”
The study, titled “Genetics of Vegetarianism: A Genome-Wide Association Study,” was conducted in collaboration with scientists from Washington University in St. Louis and Edinburgh, United Kingdom.
