CAROL STREAM (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Eleven couples — all married 55 years or more — showed their love this Valentine's Day by renewing their vows at Belmont Village Senior Living.
Richard Nelson, who said he’s 90 years young, was celebrating 71 years of marriage with his wife Evelyn Tuesday. He shared his keys to a happy marriage.
“Never let a day go by without saying, ‘I love you,’ and never go to bed mad,” he said. “If you do those two things, you’ll have a happy marriage.”

Richard said he treats Valentine’s Day as “sweetheart day.”
“That means I always give her a box of candy or flowers,” he said.
Herb and Shirley Wierzbach have been married 63 years.

“I always agree with my wife," Herb said. "That’s why we’re this long in marriage."
The Valentine's Day renewal is a tradition at Belmont Village. Linda and Kermit Ludwig were celebrating 60 years. She said the answer is simple.
“It’s teamwork,” Linda said. “You have to work together, love each other, and take the good with the bad.”

Lee and Charles Beggs were celebrating 55 years of marriage. The two grew up in Glen Ellyn and were high school sweethearts at Glenbard High School.
“I think love keeps you together,” Lee said. “If you truly love each other, you’ll do whatever you need to do.”
Said Charles: “Care about the other person, and work together in life and in love.”

John and Ginny Garland were also at Tuesday’s vow renewal. John was 20 when he married Ginny. After 74 years of marriage, John, now 94 years old, said he’s got it all figured out:
“Two words: Yes, dear.”
Words of wisdom and, of course, a little sense of humor.
