(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A cat leapt five stories from a burning Englewood apartment Thursday and landed with bounce, apparently unharmed, on a patch of grass below.

Chicago Fire Department spokesperson Larry Langford described the black feline as resembling a "flying squirrel" as it gracefully dove through the air, possibly using one of its nine lives in the process.

The cat's fate seemed uncertain, moments earlier.

"People could see a black cat that was sitting on the ledge, just looking out," said Langford, who watched with people in the neighborhood near 65th and Lowe around 3 p.m.

Langford had his camera rolling as the cat jumped from its burning apartment and landed on its feet on a patch of grass.

"There was a gasp from across the street, and then when the cat hit the ground and bounced off, it was like, 'Yeah!'" he said.

The cat's priority then turned to getting back in, according to Langford.

"Last time we saw the cat it was walking down the street, going around the corner, looking for another way into the building. So, the cat's fine."

The fire was extinguished, and no injuries (to humans) were reported.
