The celebration of what would have been singer-songwriter John Prine’s 80th birthday is taking place over 5 days in October in Chicago, hosted by the Hello in There Foundation.

Events include a concert at the Chicago Theater, screenings of the documentary “How Lucky Can One Man Get,” workshops and panel discussions.


The “Souvenirs” festival is scheduled for October 7th through the 11th.

The concert at the Chicago Theater is on the 8th and features Alejandro Escovedo, Billy Prine, Steve Earle, Jon Langford and Shamekia Copeland, among others.

There are events at the Old Town School of Folk Music, the Chicago History Museum and the Gene Siskel Film Center.

Also, a trolley tour of Maywood, where Prine was raised.

There will be a dedication ceremony for a John Prine mural at the Old Town School, where he took guitar lessons.

Prine was a mailman before his music career took off.

He performed in Chicago folk clubs in the 60s and 70s, including the Fifth Peg and the Earl of Old Town.

John Prine died of complications from COVID-19 in 2020.
