CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Chicago alderpeople are continuing to wrangle over who will serve on and chair City Council committees when the new term gets underway later this month.

In numbers just low enough not to trigger provisions of the Open Meetings Act, Chicago City Council members met for several hours going over the committee assignments for new and veteran alderpersons.

Afterwards,  Rules Committee Chair Alderwoman Michelle Harris told reporters they’ll later deal with chairmanships. Could we see big changes from the current list?

"Who knows?" Harris said. “If I had that crystal ball, I’d be through with this process (laughs) (be)cause I’d have all the answers.”

After the Committee members and vice-chairs are decided, she said, they’ll revisit the issue of committee chairmanships with an expanded number of committees and things like the wishes of the Black, Latino and Progressive caucuses figure into the mix. There’s word some of the most powerful committees could change hands.

But, Chairwoman Harris is not talking about any of that now.

There’s speculation that Budget Committee Chair Pat Dowell is eyeing taking Scott Waguespack’s place as head of the all-powerful Finance Committee. Harris chose her words carefully. She said both Waguespack and Dowell are "still on the list" to head their respective committees.

There may be another meeting this week.
