CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Community Policing is widely supported in Chicago, but even people in the Criminal Justice reform arena admit people are still arguing over what it is...or should be.

Mecole Jordan-McBride said community policing comes and goes in Chicago. She's advocacy director for the Chicago neighborhood policing initiative and works with the current version, but she said it's not the same.

"Community policing was prioritized right- this idea of getting to know community members, not just a subset of officers, right? It was all officers working to be... had this responsibility and was involved and the idea of getting to know community members bringing in their concerns."

Rosanna Andrew, Director of the University of Chicago Crime Lab said another challenge is that some people say they want tough unfettered policing, while others complained that they're being over policed and both views are based on misconceptions.

"The government can deploy forces to go out there and crush crime, but if they're doing it at the expense of trust and legitimacy, that's going to be... come at a great cost, and I don't think it's what anybody actually wants."
