CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO ) — After another violent weekend, Chicago aldermen will get to question the police department Monday morning.

The Budget and Government Operations Committee will discuss Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s nearly $1.9 billion budget plan for the department during a 9 a.m. hearing.

Ald. Silvana Tabares, who sits on the committee, said she wants to see more officers hired to work in her Southwest Side ward.

Tabares said she also wants to hear the department’s plans for keeping her residents safe.

After last year’s budget left more than 600 police vacancies unfilled, the mayor has proposed an increase of $189 million for the department.

Other aldermen, including downtown’s Brendan Reilly, have also said they want more officers on the street as the city grapples with an increase in shootings.

At the same time, several of their colleagues want some of the police department’s budget reallocated to other city services.

The hearing comes a little more than a week after 18-year-old Azul de La Garza was fatally shot Tabares’ 23rd Ward.
