Man ordered to pay $160K to woman he met on dating app for allegedly torturing, killing her dogs

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Midlothian man has been ordered to pay his ex-girlfriend $160,000 for allegedly torturing and killing her dogs.

Sarah Manos, 28, said she met 29-year-old Matthew Berry in April of 2020 on a dating app, where they connected over their interest in dogs.

A month later, Berry became verbally abusive to her and physically abusive to her dogs,  a Shih Tzu and Bichon Frisé, Manos’ civil suit alleged.

The suit said that he injected medication into one dog and it died the next day while the second dog died a month later after it was allegedly abused by Berry.

Manos never filed criminal charges.

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s office said there wasn’t enough evidence but a judge found in her favor in the civil suit, awarding more than $160,000, finding that Berry violated the Illinois Human Care for Animals Act.

That violation was $100,000 and money was also awarded for the cost of the dogs, vet bills, mental health services, attorney’s fees and emotional distress.

Manos told the Chicago Sun-Times the suit was her way of holding Barry accountable and making him feel the consequences.
