Parents, students protest activities ban amid spike in COVID-19 cases at Oak Park and River Forest High School

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Parents and students at Oak Park and River Forest High School staged a protest Saturday night after the school halted sports and extra-curricular activities over a spike in COVID-19 cases.

They came out, about 100 parents and students wearing masks and holding signs to show their displeasure over the ban until after winter break.

Dr. Theresa Chapple-McGruder with the Oak Park Health Department told the crowd 17 new COVID-19 cases means the school has a transmission rate four times higher than the community.

The crowd jeered as Chapple-McGruder tried to explain the process for sports and extra-curricular activities resuming at the high school.

“The way that you get to play is to let me finish,” Chapple-McGruder told the crowd, according to footage captured by CBS 2 Chicago.

District 200 Board of Education Supt. Greg Johnson said they’re trying to bring back sports and activities this week if everyone in the school wears N95 masks that will be handed out, more students and teachers submit to saliva testing and students spread out at lunch.

Athletes expressed frustration with another year of losing out on sports.
