(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Piece by piece, a north suburban teen has built a LEGO-related empire with a little help from the adults at home.

Parker Krex of Deerfield wasn’t even 10 years old when he pitched a business idea to his parents that involved selling sets of LEGO toys.

“I, as a 9-year-old, did not have the capital to start my own business,” the now-16-year-old told the Noon Business Hour on Friday.

The grown-ups went for it. It’s still a family business, Krex said, but he is the CEO and “Chief Entertainment Officer” of Brick Loot, which allows consumers to sign up to receive monthly boxes by subscription. The individual contents of each box — bricks, figures and accessories — are a surprise to recipients.

“We curate the boxes, so, we decide what goes in, but every month we have a theme,” Krex said. “So, it may be like a space theme, or like a racing theme. Everything in the box will revolve around that theme.”

Subscribers sometimes help the company decide what themes to select, he says.

His advice to young would-be entrepreneurs: Don’t think success comes overnight.

“It just takes a lot of hard work and a lot of time,” Krex said. “Lots of people think they’re going to get rich quick.”
