Chicago beaches expected to reopen Memorial Day weekend

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- In the coming days, Chicago is going to be looking more like Chicago again.

Chicago officials announced Monday that the more than two-dozen beaches along the Lake Michigan shoreline will reopen May 28, just in time for Memorial Day weekend.

The city's beaches were closed during the summer of 2020 in line with COVID-19 restrictions, and while typically beach season runs from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, it was unclear when beaches would reopen this year to visitors.

Along with the reopening of beaches, Chicago will also turn on Buckingham Fountain.

"This Saturday, May 22, Buckingham Fountain will return. It will be back on," said Chicago Park District Superintendent and CEO Mike Kelly. "Friday, May 28, we will reopen our beaches."

For the first time in over a year, a ComEd contest winner will once again revive Buckingham Fountain with the flip of a switch. The fountain was not turned on last summer to prevent people from gathering.

Additionally, a number of summertime events are returning to the city, too, such as Night Out in the Parks; and, movie screenings in 100 parks will kick off on July 6 at Oakdale Park in the Washington Heights community.
