(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A southwestern suburb has decided to change the location of its Independence weekend fireworks show in light of the mass shooting in Highland Park last summer.
Tinley Park Village Manager Pat Carr said his village came within 15 minutes of canceling the 4th of July fireworks show in McCarthy Park last year following the parade shooting on the North Shore.
The show went on but, Carr says, not before hours of extra security preparations.
“We did building-to-building searches along the perimeter with bomb dogs and officers, checking all the garbage cans,” he said.
Carr said the fireworks display is being moved this year to the Metra station parking lots on 80th Avenue on the 3rd of July.
“This boils down to a more safe and secure site for the residents,” he said.
This year’s fireworks show will be put on by the village; previously, the park district oversaw the event.
