CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - With the measure being sidetracked Wednesday, Mayor Johnson does not put much stock in Alderman Brian Hopkins proposal for an 8 p.m. curfew for unaccompanied minors downtown.

Hopkins wants to  move up the city’s 10 p.m. curfew for young people, at least in the downtown area. But, the ordinance that he introduced was sent to the Rules Committee, where some measures languish.

Mayor Johnson has previously said there’s no evidence earlier curfews work. After the council meeting, he said he wants to focus on things that do work.

“I know there’s been a lot of focus around what time people should go to bed,” Johnson said. “What I’m doing is I’m having conversations, and we’re actually building an operation where we create opportunities for our young people to have safe spaces where they can grow and learn and discover their purpose.”

Investing in long-neglected neighborhoods and youth programs has been a cornerstone of the Mayor’s anti-crime efforts.
