CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Chicago firefighters have extinguished a fire at a vacant building on the Southwest Side that raged for several hours.
Assistant Deputy Fire Commissioner Donald Walker said crews were dispatched to the two-story building near 63rd and Francisco at about 4:30 a.m. and began aggressively attacking the fire.
However, crews soon had to pull their water lines back due to heavy flames coming from the roof, Walker said.
Eventually, firefighters were able to get the fire under control and put it out shortly before 7:45 a.m.
Walker said one person was rescued from the building and was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
The fire department noted the vacant building has had fires in the past, and the Chicago Office of Fire Investigation (OFI) is looking into reports of squatters having occupied the building.
City cameras captured the fire, which triggered an immediate extra alarm response, the CFD said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
