Lurie Children's Hospital is celebrating its 140th anniversary, and the City of Chicago gave it a special honor for that milestone.

June 9th will officially be Lurie Children's Day in Chicago. Mayor Lori Lightfoot and the City Council issued the proclamation to honor the hospital for its 140 years of service.

Lurie's Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Michelle Stephenson said the hospital is grateful to be able to continue its mission of caring for children from Chicago and beyond.

Stephenson said Lurie Children’s Hospital serves more than 225,000 unique children.

The hospital was founded in 1882 as the Maurice Porter Memorial Hospital. When it moved to its current facility in Streeterville in 2012, the hospital was renamed to Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

“We serve kids from all 50 states and about 50 countries around the world,” Stephenson said. “We are a resource for Chicago [and] the region, but also for the country and the world.”
