(WBBM NEWSROOM) — The Chicago Jazz Festival has officially kicked off.

Dozens of performances are on the bill through Sunday, split between Millennium Park and the Chicago Cultural Center. Admission is free.

Starting this year’s Chicago Jazz Festival, with the early sets in the Cultural Center’s Claudia Cassidy Theater, was The Young Masters.

On trumpet, 17-year-old Nathaniel Harrington is the youngest on stage with the group, which is part of the Live the Spirit Residency. The Englewood non-profit has encouraged young musicians to write and perform their own material for nearly two decades.

This performance one of dozens that will reach the ears of Chicagoans through Sunday during the Chicago Jazz Festival, which will cater to a wide range of jazz tastes. To name a few the Big Shoulders Brass Band, Charlie Sepulveda and the Turnaround, Jeremiah Collier, Alejandro Salazar and the Afro Cuban Exchange, even the Spanish Harlem Orchestra.

A number of young jazz musicians in the mix on the Harris Theater rooftop, to include the Kenwood Academy High School Jazz Band, and the Youth Jazz Ensemble of DuPage.
