Nearly half the people shot over the holiday weekend — and nearly half of those killed — were attacked in three police districts on the South Side where shootings have been down this year.

A total of 23 people were shot in the 4th, 7th and 9th police districts, four of them fatally. The districts include the Englewood, Bridgeport, South Chicago, South Deering and Calumet Heights neighborhoods.

The holiday weekend was more deadly than Labor Day weekend last year, when 67 people were shot, six of them fatally. A year earlier, in 2020, 56 people were also shot over the holiday weekend, eight of them fatally. Over Labor Day weekend in 2019,  43 people were shot citywide, eight of them fatally.

The deadliest attack over the weekend happened Sunday in the South Chicago neighborhood, killing two men and wounding two others. Another two men, also 18 and 20, were wounded.

Police said no one was in custody but that detectives were following up on leads. “We’re certain that someone in the community knows who did it,” Chief of Detectives Brendan Deenihan said in a news conference Tuesday morning. “We do have leads we’re following up on, but we definitely need more help,” he said.
