(WBBM NEWSRADIO) – Chicago health officials have announced a new strategy to head off a growing cluster of measles cases at the city's largest migrant shelter in Pilsen: a second vaccination.

The Chicago Department of Public Health said everyone at the Cermak and Halsted facility should be receiving a measles vaccine dose 28 days after their first shot.

Families with young children are being asked to keep them away from childcare and preschool until at least three weeks after they either receive a second vaccine or after their last exposure.

The city health department has identified 26 confirmed cases of measles in Chicago residents, with the majority associated with the Pilsen new-arrivals shelter.

“Of the 26 confirmed cases, 19 are in children below the age of 5, underscoring the critical importance of the vaccine in fighting the spread of this disease in young children,” officials said in a news release.
