(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Chicago mayoral candidate Paul Vallas says he knows how to get more sorely needed police officers.
The former Chicago schools CEO said Monday he would like to waive the residency requirement for city cops, in an effort to make it easier to recruit officers and grow the force to his goal of 13,000.
Vallas said Chicagoans are being terrorized on their own streets by criminals who believe they will not be punished under the failed policies of Lori Lightfoot.
Besides giving the city the ability to attract quality candidates from other departments, Vallas said waiving the residency requirement would remove barriers to other recruitment opportunities.
He also suggests creating a reserve corps of hundreds of former police officers that he says have left the department to become firefighters.
