(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — In a year where carjackings are on pace to set a record, Chicago Police Supt. David Brown said 40 officers will now focus more of their attention on that offense.

After Brown and his team spoke to reporters for 10 minutes — detailing what he called the holistic approach to fighting gangs, guns and drugs — Brown said he wanted to make it clear to the news media what the lead was.

"We're going after gangs. That's the top line for this presser. We're going after gangs," Brown said.

"And I said what I said.  We're going after gangs, and we're going to do it constitutionally. We're going to make sure we don't violate anyone's rights."

Brown said the gangs are out of control.

He says he is adding 40 officers to a team to concentrate more on carjackings.
