CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A West Side Chicago alderman who was running unopposed is now in a race again. And, that was just one of the developments on a busy President’s Day of campaigning in Chicago politics.
There are about ten aldermanic candidates running unopposed in next Tuesday’s Citywide elections, and, for a while, 28th Ward Alderman Jason Ervin was the 11th, having knocked his other opponents off the ballot with petition challenges.
But, following a court ruling Friday, the Chicago Board of Elections put challenger Shawn Walker back on the ballot. Early voting was delayed in the 28th for a few hours Monday while the ballots were changed on the touch-screen voting machines used for early voting. But, election officials said more hearings are scheduled this week, so things could change.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot and her wife, First Lady Amy Eschelman, took part in early voting Monday, casting ballots at Northeastern Illinois University El Centro on North Avondale Avenue.
Elsewhere on the campaign trail, Paul Vallas announced an endorsement from Jerry Joyce, a former Assistant State’s Attorney who was a candidate in the last mayoral election.
Meanwhile, the Chicago Teachers Union, who is solidly behind Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson, promoted a podcast which essentially criticizes Paul Vallas’ tenure when he ran the Chicago Public Schools and his campaign.
One of Brandon Johnson’s colleagues on the Cook County Board, Commissioner Dennis Dear announced he is backing Lori Lightfoot.
And Congressman Jesus Chuy Garcia, who’s fighting Johnson for the progressive mantle and labor support announced that he’s been endorsed by Dolores Huerta, a national labor leader who, along with Cesar Chavez, co-founded the alliance that evolved into the United Farm Workers.
