(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The new head of Chicago Public Schools said he is cutting quarantine time for people who test positive for the virus, beginning this weekend.

CPS CEO Pedro Martinez said reducing the quarantine period from 14 days to 10 is the right thing to do. His direction comes after Chicago's public health commissioner said the spread of COVID-19 among students and staff in CPS is minimal.

Martinez said he's trying to strike a balance between parents who are concerned about the spread of COVID and those who want their children in classrooms. The new procedure takes effect Oct. 9.

"That is what the science is telling us to do now," Martinez said.

He said the goal is to have comprehensive testing in all schools soon.

The biggest challenge in achieving that goal is getting enough staff on board to handle the testing, he said.
