CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Morning snow showers and blustery winds reared its ugly head Monday morning, a far cry from last week's summer-like warmth.
The winter blast had to be a shock for the Chicago area, who for eight consecutives days, experienced splendid warm weather. Inland temperatures reached the coveted 80 degree mark most of those days. But, Sunday night, in a 24-hour span, temperatures dropped by 38 degrees and snow showers started to fall.
The wintry precipitation has continued throughout the morning commute and, coupled with the freezing temperatures, has made driving treacherous in spots. The freezing temperatures has resulted in slick, icy spots on several ramps and bridges.
The snow could ultimately accumulate to a slushy coating on some grassy surfaces, according to AccuWather.
The showers will stop by the early afternoon hours, but it will remain unseasonably cold and quite windy, with an expected high of only 40 and wind chills in the 20s. Tonight will still be brisk, with a projected low of 32.
The good news: We will start to thaw from this April cold snap starting tomorrow. The area will climb up to the mid 50s, and by Thursday, temps could flirt with 70 degrees.
