CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Chicago Department of Public Health announced Friday the city is making significant progress in the fight against COVID-19.

During an appearance at a vaccination site in the Gage Park neighborhood on the South Side, Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady administered the second dose of the COVID vaccine to Mayor Lightfoot before delivering several doses of good news when it comes to the spread of COVID-19 in Chicago.

"Today, in the City of Chicago, we are averaging just 323 new COVID cases per day. That is down from more than 3,000 a day, just at the peak a few months ago," Dr. Arwady said.

The news was met by applause. She said case numbers dropped by 29 percent in the last week alone.

"And that is not just the snowstorm, because testing is down just six percent and cases dropping 29 percent," Dr. Arwady said.

Dr. Arwady hopes to drive that number below 200 new cases per day as the year goes on. She added the test positivity rate in Chicago is 3.5 percent - the lowest it has been throughout the pandemic.

On the vaccination front, Dr. Arwady said 100 percent of doses were administered within a week of delivery.
