After months of waiting, the CDC approved the Pfizer and Moderna COVID vaccines for children under 5, and the City of Chicago has several vaccination clinics scheduled to begin.
The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) plans to host family vaccination clinics on the weekends at City Colleges of Chicago locations, starting Saturday at Kennedy-King College.
On the same day, the CDPH at-home vaccination program will expand to include children who are at least 6 months old.
CDPH already has nearly 25,000 doses of the vaccine for young children. Pfizer’s vaccine for children under 5 is a three-shot set, and the Moderna vaccine is two shots.
The move comes as Chicago and Cook County move from high to medium community level risk.
Although young children have typically fared better against COVID than adults, CDPH Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwady said 442 kids under the age of 4 have died in the US from the virus since the pandemic began.
Arwady said the agency has been planning its roll out for months. She added that bringing the youngest family members in for vaccinations is a great time to get boosters for anyone 5 and up.
Lurie Children’s Hospital told patients to check its website Tuesday for information about shots for children under 5.
