(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — The Lightfoot Administration is out with a new "Action Plan" for handling solid waste, including recyclable materials, across the city.

It's a plan put together along with the non-profit Delta Institute, and it has more than 60 recommendations for what Angela Tovar calls "waste material management."

Tovar, Chicago's Chief Sustainability Officer, said the overall strategy outlined in the report includes sending fewer items to landfills, creating job opportunities and broadening the focus when it comes to recycling.

Given Chicago's poor record on recycling, it's fair to ask if officials are giving up on getting the public to do better.

No, Tovar says. But the recommendations include educating the public and expanding opportunities for people to recycle.

Meantime, Chicago officials are looking at how other cities are doing it.

Tovar said another element will focus on environmental justice and addressing inequities.
