CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Starting Monday, the city of Chicago has a new tool to go after people parking illegally in lanes for bikes, buses and pedestrians.
There will be no tickets on windshields; instead, automatic cameras on the front of city vehicles will take pictures of cars parked illegally in bike lanes, bus lanes, at bus stops, in crosswalks and other no parking zones. The city will then mail tickets to car owners.
Downtown Ald. Brendan Reilly (42nd) told residents in an email last week that eight cameras have been installed, and ticketing will start Monday.
The Smart Street pilot program had been pushed back — to the frustration of the biking community, which expects it to improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians.
The areas affected are roughly from North Avenue to Roosevelt Road and from Ashland Avenue to Lake Michigan.
