CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The first question on the ballot today for voters in Chicago is whether to increase the transfer tax on the sale of more expensive properties in order to raise money to address homelessness.
University of Chicago public policy professor Christopher Berry said the homeless situation in the city is truly a crisis, but he thinks raising the transfer tax on properties worth more than $1 million is genuinely a tough call.
“Voters are a little bit reluctant to give new sources of revenue to a set of politicians who they, by and large, don’t have a lot of faith in,” Berry said.
He believes some of that skepticism is due to a lack of specifics of how the City would spend the money.
Berry expects low turnout today, which will give an advantage to the side that’s more organized in getting voters to the polls.
