(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium has a new resident — a giant Pacific octopus — that needs a name.
Next week, visitors of the extra-admission Octopus: Blue Planet II 4D exhibit can vote their preference from five suggested names for the octopus, which is the largest of its kind in the aquatic world.
The big-brained, eight-armed organism is considered a master of camouflage. Each arm has 280 suckers of various sizes that help it navigate its watery world.
The suggested names are:
— Anderson, for the late cephalopod researcher Dr. Roland Anderson.
— Attenborough, for legendary naturalist Sir David Attenborough.
—Dofleini (pronounced DOF-lee-knee), the scientific name of the giant Pacific octopus.
—Knapp, for Dr. Chuck Knapp, vice president of conservation research at the Shedd.
— Sawyer, for Ernie Sawyer, Shedd’s senior aquarist who retired last year.
