New merchandise unveiled Wednesday highlights the social-media persona of SUE, the Field Museum’s star T-Rex attraction.
SUE, of course, is the world-renowned fossil the museum acquired in the late-1990s and began displaying in 2000. But the dinosaur also lives in the social-media realm as a slightly bratty denizen of the cultural institution.
SUE took to Twitter to announce an exclusive line of products beyond the Field Museum’s gift shops.
“SUE and the museum sort of have a history on Twitter of this parent-child relationship that I think followers enjoy, and it’s all in service of making science and natural history more approachable,” Katharine Uhrich, the museum’s social media manager, explains.
From shirts to shoes and even face masks, the designs from local artists embody the apex predator’s irreverent Twitter presence. SUE has more than 72,000 followers.
The merchandise includes SUE’s nickname ‘murderbird’ and professed love of ham.
Sales from the Threadless shop will help support the Field Museum. Uhrich hopes it will attract more visitors too.
The Field Museum reopened to visitors on Jan. 23.
